May Crowning
One of the most beautiful traditions we have at Liberia Mission and St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School is our annual May Crowning. Each May, the month of Mary, we have an all-school Mass that is preceded by a beautiful Marian procession. Two students from the graduating ninth-grade class are selected to play the roles of Mary and Joseph. This year, Queen and Randall were selected; they were accompanied by their many younger brothers and sisters from the lower classes who led the way as ushers, adorning the path with flower petals.
The Holy Mass, which was celebrated this year by the fantastic Fr. Deepak, began with this joyous event . At the end of the procession, Fr. Deepak crowned our statue of Mary, giving her the honor she deserves as the Queen of our hearts. After Holy Mass, all the students brought their flowers and laid them at Mary’s feet. It was truly a heartwarming sight to see them all so eager to show their love for our Blessed Mother.
Our May Crowning is not the only special devotion to Mary that we participate in during the Month of Mary. We pray a decade of the Holy Rosary during each morning devotion before school, and it is accompanied by a deep reflection on that day’s mystery. At the mission we pray the entire rosary each evening for prayer. There is also the Novena to Our Lady of Fatima and, of course, we sing plenty of Marian Hymns during all moments of prayer!
Giving honor to Mary is such a special part of our Catholic faith. She gave birth to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and was smiled upon by God as a model human being. We can learn so much from her example and from her moments of joy AND suffering. Our May Crowning, as well as our other activities during the Month of Mary, are just small signs of our great faith in Mary as our Holy Mother.
