Walk/Run for Liberia Mission 5K Fundraiser

Join us THIS weekend for our virtual Walk/Run for Liberia Mission 5K fundraiser! All proceeds will support Liberia Mission's education fund. We provide partial scholarships to our former beneficiaries on the Mission, helping to launch students on their college journeys. Hear from some of our students to see how your donations are directly impacting their lives!

WILHELMINA “WILLY”

Wilhelmina "Willy" is one of our most beloved staff members here at Liberia Mission. She is a former beneficiary and is called Mother by all despite her being only 23. She’s a naturally warm and loving person to all whom she meets and is currently working part-time at the Mission as a farm worker.

What are you studying at university and why?
Willy: I am studying commercial agriculture at the University of Liberia because I
think agriculture is the greatest opportunity for work in my country and because it is my passion.

What do you plan to do with your degree?
Willy: I plan on having a vegetable farm. I am hoping to grow everything, but I
really like cucumbers, peppers, bitterball, and yams. I will need to buy some land,
but I think that God will work it all out.

Is there anything you’d like to say to your sponsors?
Willy: I’d love to say thank you to all of my sponsors. You have truly blessed me
for all my life, and I hope only the best for all of you. It is my dearest wish to make you proud and to live my life in honor of your sacrifices you made for me. God bless you.

HANDFUL

Handful was the second child to be taken in by Liberia Mission when it began in 2003. He’s been working with the Mission as a house parent since finishing school, and he is
currently planning on moving to the US to be with his betrothed Claire, a former missionary/volunteer at Liberia Mission.

What did you study in school and when did you graduate?
Handful: I was a general agriculture major, and I graduated in March of 2022. I
started school in 2016, but UL (University of Liberia) can be quite difficult seeing as the semesters can be months, and sometimes years apart.

What do you plan to do with your degree?
Handful: I’m planning on having a palm plantation here in Liberia, but first, I plan to work in the US to save up some money and begin my project of building here. The oil, the palm nuts, and the palm wine are all very important parts of Liberian life, and so it would be very profitable!

Is there anything you’d like to say to your sponsors?
Handful: Yes! I would like to thank you for all you have done for me. You paid for
my entire life when I was just a kid who had no opportunities for something better. Your efforts have put me through school from the age of 5 to 25. You fed me, clothed me, and educated me. Words can not say how much you have helped me and my family, and from the bottom of my heart I would like to say thank you!

PAYE

Paye is currently working part-time as one of our maintenance team. He has been a Mission beneficiary for many years and handles his responsibilities with enthusiasm and maturity.

What are you studying at university?
Paye: I am studying sociology at the University of Liberia and have been for just
over 3 years now.

What do you hope to do with your degree?
Paye: I could see myself working at a government agency. I think the Ministry of Health would be most likely, considering what I have been learning ... I would really rather work within the public health world than anywhere else, if I have a choice.

Is there anything you’d like to say to your sponsors?
Paye: Thank you for your continued help in my life. You have given me the greatest gift possible, the gift of education. Without it, my life would be going nowhere fast, and I’d likely be unable to find work. I hope God richly blesses you for all your efforts, and that I may one day meet all of you wonderful people who have been willing to help me.

WALK/RUN FOR LIBERIA MISSION 5K FUNDRAISER

What: Virtual 5K Walk/Run (3.1 miles).

When: Complete anytime on or around Saturday, May 20th/Sunday, May 21, 2023. (Add reminder to Google Calendar)

Where: Walk/run anywhere you choose!

Donation: Your donation of any amount will support Liberia Mission's education fund. We provide partial scholarships to our former beneficiaries on the Mission, helping to launch students on their college journeys. Your donation empowers young Liberians to break the cycle of poverty by becoming future leaders in their families, communities, and country in the wake of brutal civil wars and a deadly Ebola outbreak.

The education fund has been used by Liberia Mission to support students attending universities such as The University of Liberia, Stella Maris Polytechnic University, and United Methodist University. To date, the participating students have pursued collegiate degrees in areas such as General Agriculture, Public Administration, Accounting, Civil Engineering, Nursing, and Sociology.

Have Fun! Organize a group of family and friends to join you in walking or running a 5K for the youth of Liberia Mission. Use the hashtag #WalkForLiberiaMission to share pictures of your walk/run. Tag us on Instagram and Facebook @franciscanworks!
