Our Second Annual Honors Program
On Friday, February 28, St. Anthony of Padua hosted its Second Annual Honors Program, an event that recognizes the school’s highest-performing students for the first semester. Fifty students obtained a first semester average between 88-91, and they received a certificate and the title of “Honor Scholar.” Twenty students obtained a first semester average of 91 or above, and they received the “High Honor Scholar” title, as well a special, golden certificate. There were many proud parents in attendance, and the program proceeded without a hitch!
Apart from demonstrating the high standard of academic excellence at St. Anthony’s, the Honors Program also showcased the wide range of talent that its students possess. Students, both old and young, sang songs, gave speeches, and even recited poetry in front of a packed St. Michael the Archangel Chapel. The school’s highly capable administration gave in-depth reports on the academic and behavioral performances of the students, and Vice Principal for Instruction, Kwei N. Menyen, also emphasized that eighteen St. Anthony students received mid-year promotion--which is a school record! Mid-year promotion occurs when a student receives a 91 or above for his/her first semester average and is subsequently promoted to the next grade for the second semester (two students who received a 91 or above are in K-1, which doesn’t qualify for mid-year promotion).
In addition to the students’ impressive performances, we also had a special guest speaker, Mr. John S.M. Yormie, Jr. Mr. Yormie is Executive Director of the Liberia Research and Development Networks, as well as Coordinator at the Gabriel L. Dennis Foreign Service Institute. He delivered a meaningful speech to the students and parents, stressing the importance of positive thinking and doing a job well done without thinking about how much money will be earned. His message was appropriate for the social and economic situation that Liberia is currently facing, and the students received it attentively. Mr. John Young, newly appointed Director of Liberia Mission, asked the students to give their achievement to God and recognize that the source of all success comes from Him.
Of course, the main event was the certification of our scholars! One-by-one, the students came forward as the school and mission recognized each student’s achievement.
After the Honors Program, everyone went to the school yard to take photos. It was a joyous way to end such a wonderful morning. Both parents and students were smiling as they captured the beautiful moment. We are so grateful for the example these students have set and are sure that their number will be even higher next year! In the meantime we tell God thank you that our Second Annual Honors Program was a huge success!
